Mumbwa Heritage Sites- Hot Springs
Several hot springs are found in the Mumbwa District .
 |
Kalilwe Hot Springs are located 2.5 kilometres northeast of Mumbwa. With two pools about 40 metres apart, it is a popular social site for locals to meet and bath. The up-stream pool with temperatures above 40°C is used by men, while the cooler pool down-stream is used by women. The area is also a burial site for Chief Mumba of the Kaonde. |
Kapiamema Hot Springs, located five kilometres south of the Hippo Mine, are stunningly scenic. The springs rise in a beautiful pool at the base of coarse pink porphyritic granite on the southern extension of the Lubungu fault zone. The mild odour of hydrogen sulphide testifies to the gas emission. Located in the xxx Game Management Area adjacent to the Kafue National Park, it is possible to bathe and game view simultaneously at these springs.

Lubungu Hot Springs, situated in the Kafue National Park, one kilometre north of the Lubungu Pontoon, are among the most spectacular in Zambia owing to their large multicoloured travertine, a deposit of limestone formed around the spring mouth. The travertine is approximately 4 metres high. Here the water is hot enough to boil eggs. The springs contain small traces of radon in the water. The radioactivity is due primarily to decay of tiny traces of uranium and thorium. The radon, however, is present in harmless quantities. |
